# Choosing Windows and Doors for a New Extension

Plan doors, windows and roof glazing together for a consistent extension design.

Windows and doors have a major influence on how an extension eventually looks and feels.

They determine not only the appearance from outside but also the amount of natural light, views and connection with the garden.

## Start planning early

Ideally, consider the windows and doors while the extension is still being designed.

This provides more opportunity to optimise opening sizes, door configurations, floor levels and roof glazing.

## Bifold or sliding doors?

Bifolds are particularly useful where creating a substantial open connection with the garden is important.

Sliding doors can be attractive where large glass panels and views are the priority.

## Aluminium or uPVC windows?

Both can work extremely well.

Aluminium windows complement aluminium doors and provide slim contemporary profiles.

uPVC windows can provide excellent performance and value, particularly where multiple windows are required throughout the property.

## Consider roof glazing

Extensions can sometimes reduce daylight reaching the original part of the house.

A roof lantern or flat roof light can introduce additional daylight from above and become an important part of the overall design.

## Coordinate everything

Doors, windows and roof glazing shouldn’t be selected independently if they are all part of the same project.

Consider colours, frame proportions, sightlines and glazing together.

Bi Folds & Windows Direct can supply the complete glazing package for an extension, including aluminium bifold doors, sliding doors, aluminium or uPVC windows and roof glazing.

We cover Brentwood, Shenfield, Epping, Loughton, Chigwell, Chelmsford, Billericay, Ongar and surrounding areas.

Aluminium bifold doors are particularly popular for kitchen extensions, rear extensions and open-plan living areas.\n\nThey provide large areas of glazing when closed and can create a substantial opening between the house and garden when opened.\n\nThe ideal configuration depends on the width and height of the structural opening and how the room will be used."

They can provide fewer vertical frame sections and excellent views of the garden when the doors are closed.\n\nIf creating a wide connection between the house and garden is the priority, bifold doors are worth considering. If large panes of glass and minimal interruption to the view are more important, sliding doors can be an excellent choice.\n\nBi Folds & Windows Direct supplies and installs both systems, allowing us to recommend the most suitable option for each property."
