3-Panel vs 4-Panel Bifold Doors: Which Configuration Is Better?

Find the balance between panel size, visible frames and everyday operation.

Black-framed bifold doors folded to the side of a red-brick extension, opening a kitchen onto the patio

Three and four-panel bifold doors are among the most common configurations used on UK extensions.

The right choice depends mainly on the width of the opening and how you want the doors to operate.

    Three-panel bifold doors

A three-panel configuration can work particularly well across smaller and medium-sized openings.

Using three panels instead of four can also mean fewer vertical frame sections across the glass, depending on the overall dimensions.

    Four-panel bifold doors

Four panels can be appropriate across wider openings and provide additional configuration possibilities.

The doors can potentially be arranged so the panels operate and stack in different combinations depending on the system.

Don’t choose by panel number alone

    Panel dimensions matter.

Trying to force too few panels into a very wide opening can result in panels that are unsuitable for the chosen system. Equally, unnecessarily dividing an opening into too many narrow panels adds more frame sections.

The objective should be to find the best balance between panel size, appearance and practical operation.

Bi Folds & Windows Direct can recommend a configuration based on your opening rather than simply quoting a predetermined number of panels.
