    Overview

Composite Doors done properly across Essex

A composite door combines a solid timber inner core with a moulded glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) outer skin. The result is a door with the structural feel and security of a traditional timber door, the weather resistance and zero-maintenance of PVC, and a colour-stable finish that doesn't fade like painted timber.

We fit composite door (48mm timber core, our default recommendation) and premium composite (54mm timber core, premium) composite doors across Essex. Most installs are replacements of tired 1990s/2000s PVC front and back doors that have warped, gone yellow, or whose locks have worn out.

    What goes wrong

Why most cheap composite doors aren't really composite

The trade has a problem with composite door specification. Many doors sold as 'composite' are actually PVC doors with a thin GRP skin on the front — typically 28mm to 36mm core, mostly hollow, with foam fill rather than solid timber. They look identical to a true composite door or premium composite from outside on day one. They warp, sag and burgle within five years.

True composite doors are 48mm (composite door) or 54mm (premium composite) of solid laminated timber core, with full-thickness GRP skins front and back. The difference in feel is immediate — close one and it sounds like a proper timber door, not a hollow PVC slab. The difference in security is measurable — the BSI-tested forced-entry resistance of a 48mm timber core is in a different category from a foam-filled 28mm slab.

    Benefits

What you get from a composite doors job done right

    PAS24 multi-point locking

Anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-bump cylinder (TS007 3-star kitemark), 8-point hooks and bolts engaging into the frame keep.

    12-year colour-stable warranty

GRP skin won't fade, peel or chalk over 12 years — composite door's warranty is one of the strongest in the trade.

    U-value 1.0 W/m²K

Solid timber core plus thermal-broken composite frame delivers excellent thermal performance — better than most uPVC doors.

    Heavy & quiet

A 48mm solid door slab feels and sounds heavy. Closes with a satisfying thud, not a hollow rattle.

    27 colour options

composite door's range covers 27 standard colours and any RAL on request — including dual colour (different inside vs outside).

    Secured by Design

Police-preferred specification status. Many home insurers offer reduced premiums for Secured by Design doors.

    In Detail

Composite door construction, lock spec, and the differences that matter

composite door (our default): 48mm laminated timber core (engineered hardwood, not softwood pine), 2mm GRP skins front and back, polyurethane edge banding, multi-point Yale lock with TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder. 12-year colour warranty, 10-year frame warranty.

premium composite: 54mm solid timber core (premium specification), thicker GRP skin, slightly heavier feel, additional mechanical interlock in the lock keep. 12-year warranty across the board.

Lock specification: we fit only TS007 3-star kitemarked anti-snap cylinders as standard — these resist the lock-snapping technique that accounts for around 25% of all forced-entry burglaries on residential front doors. Below 3-star you're vulnerable; cylinder upgrade alone is one of the most effective security improvements possible.

Glass options: double-glazed obscure glazing in dozens of patterns (Stippolyte, Cotswold, Charcoal Sticks, Murano), or full glass options where you want the door to read as more open. Toughened or laminated to PAS24 standard.

Side panels and over-panels: matched composite panels can extend the door to fill wider openings up to ~2.4m, with options for glazed, half-glazed or fully solid panels.

Hardware: chrome, brushed steel, satin gold, matt black handle, knocker, letterbox and numerals. We size letterboxes to current Royal Mail spec (250mm × 38mm minimum aperture)..
