Question 1

How much do aluminium bifold doors cost?

Accepted Answer

The cost of aluminium bifold doors depends on the size of the opening, number of panels, configuration, colour, glazing specification and whether you require supply only or professional installation.

Because bifold doors are manufactured specifically for each opening, we recommend obtaining a quotation based on your actual requirements rather than comparing products purely on a price-per-panel basis.

Bi Folds & Windows Direct supplies and installs aluminium bifold doors throughout Essex, including Brentwood, Shenfield, Billericay, Chelmsford, Epping, Loughton, Chigwell, Ongar, Woodford, Romford and surrounding areas.

Question 2

Are aluminium bifold doors better than uPVC bifold doors?

Accepted Answer

Aluminium is particularly well suited to bifold doors because of its strength and relatively slim profiles. This allows large areas of glazing while maintaining a strong and durable frame.

Aluminium is also low maintenance and available in a wide range of colours.

For larger openings, extensions and contemporary properties, aluminium is generally our preferred material for bifold doors.

Question 3

Should I choose bifold doors or sliding doors?

Accepted Answer

The best choice depends on what you want from the opening.

Bifold doors fold and stack to one or both sides, allowing a large proportion of the opening to be completely opened.

Sliding doors use larger glazed panels that slide behind one another. They can provide fewer vertical frame sections and excellent views of the garden when the doors are closed.

If creating a wide connection between the house and garden is the priority, bifold doors are worth considering. If large panes of glass and minimal interruption to the view are more important, sliding doors can be an excellent choice.

Bi Folds & Windows Direct supplies and installs both systems, allowing us to recommend the most suitable option for each property.

Question 4

How many panels should my bifold doors have?

Accepted Answer

The correct number of panels depends on the overall width of the opening, suitable panel sizes and your preferred opening configuration.

More panels are not necessarily better. Using fewer, wider panels can reduce the amount of visible aluminium when the doors are closed.

We can recommend a configuration based on the dimensions of your opening and how you intend to use the doors.

Question 5

Can bifold doors have an everyday access door?

Accepted Answer

Depending on the configuration, bifold doors can incorporate a traffic door for everyday access.

This allows you to enter or leave through a single door without folding the complete system open, making the doors more practical throughout the year.

Question 6

What colours are available for aluminium bifold doors and windows?

Accepted Answer

Popular colours include anthracite grey, black and white.

Other colours and dual-colour combinations may also be available depending on the chosen system. Dual colour allows the internal and external faces of the frames to be finished differently.

Question 7

Are bifold doors suitable for extensions?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Aluminium bifold doors are particularly popular for kitchen extensions, rear extensions and open-plan living areas.

They provide large areas of glazing when closed and can create a substantial opening between the house and garden when opened.

The ideal configuration depends on the width and height of the structural opening and how the room will be used.

Question 8

Do bifold doors need planning permission?

Accepted Answer

Planning requirements depend on the property and the work being carried out.

In many situations, replacing existing doors or installing bifold doors as part of permitted development works may not require a separate planning application.

Different requirements can apply to listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and properties subject to specific planning restrictions.

Homeowners should confirm the requirements for their particular property with their local planning authority where necessary.

Question 9

Do new windows need trickle vents?

Accepted Answer

Ventilation requirements depend on the circumstances of the installation and the applicable Building Regulations.

Where background ventilation is required, suitable trickle vents can be incorporated into the window specification.

We can advise on suitable window and ventilation options when preparing your quotation.

Question 10

What is a window U-value?

Accepted Answer

A U-value measures how effectively a building element such as a window or door prevents heat from passing through it.

In simple terms, a lower U-value represents better thermal performance.

It is important to consider the performance of the complete window or door, including the frame and glazing, rather than looking at the glass specification alone.

Question 11

Should I choose aluminium or uPVC windows?

Accepted Answer

Both materials have advantages.

Modern uPVC windows provide excellent value, low maintenance and good thermal performance. They are an extremely popular option for whole-house replacement projects.

Aluminium windows offer slimmer profiles, strength and a contemporary appearance. They work particularly well on modern homes and extensions and can complement aluminium bifold and sliding doors.

Bi Folds & Windows Direct supplies both aluminium and uPVC windows, allowing the choice to be based on the property, design and budget.

Question 12

What are flush casement windows?

Accepted Answer

Flush casement windows are designed so that the opening sash sits flush with the surrounding frame when closed.

This creates a clean appearance and can work particularly well on both traditional and contemporary properties.

Flush casement uPVC windows are increasingly popular with homeowners who want the practical advantages of modern uPVC with a more refined appearance.

Question 13

Do you supply composite front doors?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Bi Folds & Windows Direct supplies and installs composite entrance doors in a range of styles, colours, glazing options and hardware combinations.

Front doors can also be specified alongside replacement windows to create a consistent appearance across the property.

Question 14

What is the difference between a roof lantern and a flat roof light?

Accepted Answer

Both are designed to introduce natural light through a flat roof, but they create different appearances.

A roof lantern projects above the roof and creates an architectural feature with additional visual height.

A flat roof light provides a lower-profile and more contemporary appearance.

The best option depends on the design of the extension, dimensions available and the look you want to achieve.

Question 15

Do you offer solar-control glass?

Accepted Answer

Solar-control and solar-reflective glazing options are available for suitable projects.

These can be particularly useful for larger areas of glazing and roof glazing where solar gain and overheating are concerns.

The most appropriate glazing specification depends on factors including the size, orientation and type of glazing.

Question 16

Do you remove the existing windows and doors?

Accepted Answer

Yes, removal of existing windows and doors can be included as part of our installation service.

The exact work included, including removal, installation and making good, will be detailed within your quotation.

Question 17

How long does window and door installation take?

Accepted Answer

Installation time depends on the number and type of products being installed and whether additional building work is required.

A straightforward door or window replacement may be completed relatively quickly, while whole-house replacement projects and installations involving structural alterations naturally require longer.

We can provide a clearer installation programme once the project has been surveyed and specified.

Question 18

Do you offer a survey?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Projects can be professionally surveyed before manufacture.

Accurate measurements are particularly important because windows and doors are manufactured specifically for their openings.

Question 19

Do you offer supply-only windows and doors?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We offer both supply-only and supply-and-installation options on suitable products.

Our supply-only service can be particularly useful for builders, developers and homeowners who already have their own installer.
