Overview
Sliding doors are the natural choice when you want the maximum amount of glass and the least amount of frame. Unlike bi-folds, they don't fold away — but the trade-off is huge unbroken panes of glass and a clean architectural look that suits modern extensions and renovations across Essex.
We fit premium aluminium slim-frame sliding systems with sightlines as narrow as 20mm at the interlock. Configurations from 2-pane (one fixed, one sliding) up to 4-pane double-track sets opening over 6m wide. Every install includes a precision-set bottom track, stainless steel rollers and a fully weather-sealed threshold.
What goes wrong
The single biggest failure on sliding doors is the bottom roller. Budget systems use plastic or low-grade steel rollers carrying panes that can weigh 150kg+. Within three to five years they flat-spot, the door drags, and eventually the track itself wears. Replacement is invasive — often the whole door has to come out.
The second failure mode is the threshold. A flush sliding threshold without proper drainage falls and a brush-sealed channel will pool water in heavy rain — and that water tracks back inside. We install with stainless rollers rated for the pane weight, and we set the threshold with engineered drainage detailing. It's not the part of the install you see — it's the part that decides whether the door is still moving smoothly in fifteen years.
Process
01
Site visit, measure of the structural opening, discussion of pane configuration (2, 3 or 4 pane; single or double track), threshold preference and frame colour.
02
Frame colour (any RAL), glass spec (solar-control, acoustic, low-iron), threshold type, handle finish — itemised in writing.
03
Typical lead time 6–8 weeks on premium aluminium slim-frame systems. Install date confirmed when frames leave the factory.
04
Removal of existing doors or glazing, laser-levelled track setting, perimeter weather seal and full operation test of every pane before sign-off.
05
Operation walkthrough, Certass notification within 30 days, 10-year workmanship guarantee plus 10–20 year manufacturer warranty.
Benefits
Premium slim-frame systems give 20mm sightlines at the interlock — the closest thing to a frameless wall of glass currently on the market.
Single panes weighing up to 400kg can be specified, giving uninterrupted views and a single sweep of glass across a rear elevation.
Multi-point locking on the sliding leaf, anti-lift blocks, internally beaded glazing and laminated glass option for ground-floor installs.
Thermally broken aluminium frames with double or triple-glazed sealed units. Full Building Regs compliance without compromise on sightline.
Engineered drainage falls, brush-sealed channels and EPDM perimeter gaskets. Tested against driving rain — not just calm weather.
Stainless steel rollers rated for the pane weight. A 200kg pane should glide with two fingers — and stay that way for 15+ years.
In Detail
2-pane configuration: one fixed pane, one sliding pane. The most common setup for openings 2.4–4m wide. Simple, reliable, and gives you a single large slider with a fixed picture pane alongside.
3-pane configuration: typically one fixed and two sliding (or two fixed, one sliding). Suits 3.6–5m openings and balances opening width with the cost of additional panes.
4-pane double-track: two panes per track, sliding past each other. Gives roughly 50% clear opening across the full width — ideal for 4.8m–6m+ openings where you want a generous through-flow.
Pocket doors: the sliding leaf disappears into a wall cavity for a 100% clear opening. Requires the cavity to be designed in at build stage — possible on new extensions, harder to retrofit.
Threshold: rebated weather threshold (best weather performance), low-profile (15mm step, modern look) or flush (zero step, requires careful external drainage). We survey the floor build-up before recommending.
Glass: 28mm sealed units standard with argon fill. Solar-control essential on south-facing rear elevations to manage summer heat. Acoustic laminated useful near busy roads. Low-iron glass eliminates the green tint on very large panes.

Coverage
Sliding door installs across all Essex extension and renovation hotspots — particularly Chelmsford, Brentwood, Billericay, Rayleigh and the surrounding postcodes.
