Local Detail
Harlow is the most architecturally distinctive area we work in. Frederick Gibberd's master plan delivered a town where modernist 1950s–1960s housing dominates, and original Crittall-style steel-framed windows are still in service on a meaningful proportion of properties — much of it now in serious need of replacement.
Modern aluminium replacement frames replicate the slim sightlines of the original Crittall installs without the cold-bridging or corrosion. We've done this kind of replacement repeatedly across CM18, CM19 and CM20.
Old Harlow and parts of Sawbridgeworth are conservation areas where character must be preserved — careful timber-effect replacements are usually the route. Harlow Council is the local authority. Quote slots inside five working days.
Housing stock we work with here: Frederick Gibberd-era 1950s–1960s modernist housing, original Crittall-glazed properties, plus Old Harlow conservation-area period homes and modern Church Langley new-build estates.
Our vans are around Harlow Town Park, the M11 corridor, Stansted Airport approach most weeks, so survey and aftercare visits in Harlow are easy to diarise.
Why Us
Slim-frame aluminium replicates the original Crittall sightlines without the cold-bridging. We've done this regularly across Harlow's modernist stock.
Old Harlow conservation properties get timber-effect aluminium or like-for-like replacement. We won't suggest changes that would force a planning refusal.
CM17–CM20 quote slots open 7am–8pm seven days. Most Harlow visits booked the same week as enquiry.
1960s flat-roof extensions are a Harlow specialty. We install frameless, hinged and walk-on rooflights with full lead flashing detail.
Notification with Harlow Council handled in-house. Compliance certificate posted within 30 days.
Every Harlow install. Aftercare adjustments first 12 months.
What goes wrong
Original Harlow Crittall is corroded, cold and frequently single-glazed. Slim-frame aluminium is the modern equivalent that respects the original look.
Common on 1960s extensions where the flashing was never properly dressed. Re-detail at the time of replacement is essential.
Single-glazed steel frames lose huge heat. Replacement A-rated argon units transform thermal performance and dramatically reduce condensation.
Old Harlow conservation rules limit external changes. Careful timber-effect replacement is the usual route — we'll confirm what's permitted at survey.
Process
01
We measure the opening, check the threshold and the lintel, and talk through pane counts and stacking direction on site.
02
Pane split, stacking side, traffic door position, RAL frame colour, glass spec and threshold type — all confirmed in writing.
03
Frames are made to your surveyed sizes. We confirm the install date once they leave the factory.
04
Old doors out, track laser-levelled and DPM'd, frames set square, every panel tested through its full fold before we leave.
05
Operation walk-through, Certass notification within 30 days, and a 10-year workmanship guarantee in writing.
